The Cairns NAIDOC March is a powerful tradition that honours the legacy of resistance, resilience, and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC marches began as a protest—an unwavering stand against injustice, inequality, and the denial of our rights.
While many things have changed and improved over the years, the spirit of the Cairns NAIDOC March remains rooted in that history. It is a reminder of our collective strength and the enduring fight for recognition, respect, and justice.
Each year, as we walk together, we pay tribute to those who came before us—those who stood strong so we could thrive. The Cairns NAIDOC March is not just a celebration but a declaration: we have survived, and each generation will continue to thrive, not because of what has been done for us, but because of how we have remained steadfast, resilient, and proud.
Join us as we walk in unity, pride, and hope—honouring our past, celebrating our present, and empowering our future.

Semara Jose is the dedicated March Coordinator for the Cairns NAIDOC Committee. She jokingly remarks that her loud voice had to be used for something deadly. She believes that walking together connects past struggles with present achievements and future aspirations.
As the March Coordinator, Semara handles logistics, coordinates volunteers, and leads the annual March War-Cry. Her commitment comes from a place of passion and dedication to culture and community, and she’s proud to contribute her time as a volunteer, keeping the spirit of NAIDOC alive.

The Cairns NAIDOC Committee is made up of 100% volunteers — mob and community who give their time, knowledge, and heart without pay, because standing for culture is non-negotiable.
We proudly secure government funding, corporate sponsorships, and generate ticket sales to cover the costs of delivering NAIDOC events.
But the Committee itself remains fully volunteer-run.
Every meeting, every late-night email, every big decision — it’s all carried by the hands of people committed to seeing our culture thrive.
