The KUNJUR Kup Murri Masterclass is a cultural learning experience designed to pass on traditional knowledge, strengthen identity, and bring community together through food, story, and hands-on practice.
Grounded in the age-old tradition of Kup Murri cooking, the masterclass offers participants the opportunity to learn how to prepare, build, and manage a traditional underground earth oven. It’s a full-day experience that weaves together practical skill-building, cultural mentoring, and connection across generations.
Whether you’re a young person stepping into cultural learning for the first time, or someone looking to reconnect and deepen your understanding, the Kup Murri Masterclass creates space for respectful learning, yarns, and community pride.
This event is open to all community members and focuses on nurturing leadership, cultural strength, and collective responsibility for keeping traditions alive.

Kunjur is a grassroots collective created to provide a culturally safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to connect, heal, and reclaim identity through culture, story, and shared experience.
The name “Kunjur,” gifted by the family of the late Kawanji Brady, carries deep meaning and honours a legacy of strength and community.
From weekly fire gatherings to large-scale events like the Kup Murri Masterclass and the Men’s Self Care Convention, Kunjur’s work focuses on mental health, suicide prevention, cultural education, and breaking cycles of silence through action and connection.
Driven by community, supported by volunteers, and grounded in cultural knowledge, Kunjur continues to empower mob of all ages to walk forward strong — for self, family, and future generations.
The Cairns NAIDOC Committee acknowledges Traditional Custodians of the land upon which we gather and organise our NAIDOC events. We honour their knowledge of this Country and their stories. We pay respect to our Elders who have paved the way and advocate for our rights. Our respect extends to all families that now call Cairns home and their respective Countries.

The Cairns NAIDOC Committee is made up of 100% volunteers — mob and community who give their time, knowledge, and heart without pay, because standing for culture is non-negotiable.
We proudly secure government funding, corporate sponsorships, and generate ticket sales to cover the costs of delivering NAIDOC events.
But the Committee itself remains fully volunteer-run.
Every meeting, every late-night email, every big decision — it’s all carried by the hands of people committed to seeing our culture thrive.
