The Cairns NAIDOC Elders luncheon will be held in the Lockhardt Room at the Cairns Colonial Club on Saturday 18 July 2026 from 10.30 am–1.30 pm. Guests can arrive from 10 am. This year, we gather to honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders. “50 Years of Deadly” it marks a major milestone, celebrating five decades of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, resilience, and leadership. Elders look forward to this gathering as a momentous opportunity to connect, reconnect, and share stories, relaxing and enjoying a meal prepared by the chefs at the Cairns Colonial Club. As part of this year’s celebration, we are inviting Elders to bring their own “Deadly” whether it’s an instrument, clapping sticks, kulups, a scarf, or a story. Something that reflects identity, journey, and the pride carried. Entertainment is once again provided by the incredible talents of Merindi Schrieber and Friends, whose music and spirit will weave through our gathering. The event happens because of the volunteers who see this as an act of gratitude. A way to give back to those who came before us, and to serve the Elders whose strength, courage, and cultural authority have shaped our communities and carried us through generations.

The Cairns NAIDOC Committee acknowledges Traditional Custodians of the land upon which we gather and organise our NAIDOC events. We honour their knowledge of this Country and their stories. We pay respect to our Elders who have paved the way and advocate for our rights. Our respect extends to all families that now call Cairns home and their respective Countries.

The Cairns NAIDOC Committee is made up of 100% volunteers — mob and community who give their time, knowledge, and heart without pay, because standing for culture is non-negotiable.
We proudly secure government funding, corporate sponsorships, and generate ticket sales to cover the costs of delivering NAIDOC events.
But the Committee itself remains fully volunteer-run.
Every meeting, every late-night email, every big decision — it’s all carried by the hands of people committed to seeing our culture thrive.
